Thailand — November 2022

I went to my first Muay Thai class in Thailand with no expectations. Would I learn? Would I just get my cardio in? Would I like it? Would the boys beat me up? I truly didn’t know… but I’m happy to report that it really changed my thinking on martial arts and meditation. That first class turned into a second… third…And now a part of my regular workout routine!
What is Muay Thai? It translates to “Thai boxing,” is the “art of eight limbs,” as it involves punches, elbows, knees, and shins. This stand-up combat sport originated in the 13th century Thai military. Today it is practiced all over the world!
Physically, there are a lot of benefits to picking up this martial art. It increases muscular strength and endurance and cardiovascular fitness, improves balance and joint mobility, and can even sharpen your reflexes! Mentally, I found that it can reduce my stress and improve my focus. I found when practicing that it can be meditative. If my mind is wandering during training, then I will either get hit or throw poor punches. However, if I focus my mind on the given moment, then I am better aware of both my own body and my opponents to make better, quicker decisions. The self-discipline learned in Muay Thai can also spill into the outside life as well. Muay Thai requires time and dedication for fitness and skills/technique development. The concentration that this requires can inspire other areas of your life as well. You learn how to stay calm when under pressure and make good decisions.
Muay Thai has changed my life and changed my view on martial arts. I think everyone should take the opportunity to explore a martial art. Everyone can benefit from lessons in self-defense in order to anticipate and avoid dangerous situations. As a solo female traveler, I find this very important. I want to be able to explore freely without being afraid that someone may harm me. I am better able to prevent danger and protect myself if danger arises. Martial arts are great for personal growth. It’s a sport that can be deeply personal and constantly pushing you out of your comfort zone. It teaches discipline, tolerance, fairness and humbleness. You have to honor and respect both your coaches(elders) and opponents(enemies). All these traits are valuable skills to have in the real world- and honestly make the world a better place!
